TRILOBITES
Trilobites, (like Elrathia kingii), were one of the first common multicellular life forms on Earth, and were the dominant life form during the Cambrian period. Some species were hunters, but most were scavengers. The eyes were well developed in some species. The hard exoskeleton, which allowed good preservation as a fossil, served as defensive armor, but had to be shed periodically as the creature grew. The last trilobites died out at the end of the Permian epoch. Far from being evolutionary failures, trilobites held their own for over 320 million years, twice as long as the reign of the dinosaurs.
