Compression
set might be a more accurate term to describe this type of setting, but
in the industry it's known as tension set. The platinum ring shown here
is highly compressed against the diamond, which is nestled in a precision
seat, one on each side of the diamond. The result is a setting that
hides the least amount of the diamond possible, while still affording
security. But there can be problems, which is why we no longer recommend
or sell this type of mounting. We have found that re-sizing this ring
can be difficult and costly, especially sizing it up. And although we
have never heard of a customer loosing a stone, we have seen some very
significant damage done to the exposed girdle of the diamond, in one case
quite severe, caused by everyday wear and tear.
